Amazon: medicines at the door (in the U.S., yes)

New option to make it easier to follow treatments

Share

A little over a year ago, Amazon decided to enter a new business in the US: the sale and delivery of medicines. What is its focus? To facilitate patients' access to the medicines and treatments prescribed to them and to lower the prices they pay. The system seeks to eliminate barriers so that patients maintain their treatments. Studies in the Annals of Internal Medicine point out that a significant number of patients discontinue their treatment as prescribed, often because of financial problems or difficulties in maintaining a permanent supply of prescribed drugs.

Among the features of the system offered by Amazon is an insurance price comparator, which allows patients to compare their co-payment before ordering a drug, and an Amazon Prime discount card, which gives members in this category discounts of up to 80% on generic drugs and up to 40% on brand-name drugs, when purchased without insurance benefits.

Amazon also offers a six-month supply option for the most common prescription drugs, such as atorvastatin, lisinopril and metformin.
