A little over a year ago, Amazon decided to venture into a new business in the US: the sale and delivery of medications. What is its focus? To facilitate patients' access to the medicines and treatments that have been prescribed to them and to lower the prices they pay. The system seeks to eliminate barriers so that patients can continue their treatments. Studies by Annals of Internal Medicine indicate that a significant number of patients interrupt their treatment as prescribed, often due to financial problems or difficulties in maintaining a permanent supply of prescription drugs.
Among the features of the system offered by Amazon is an insurance price comparison tool, which allows patients to compare their copay before ordering a medication, and an Amazon Prime discount card, which gives members of this category discounts of up to 80% on generic medications and up to 40% on brand-name medications when purchased without insurance benefits.
Amazon also offers a six-month supply option for common prescription medications such as atorvastatin, lisinopril, and metformin.
