Tariffs on carbon emissions

Europe considers tougher measures in its decarbonization strategy

Share

The European Union is studying the application of an import tax on a series of products from countries with low standards in the control of their greenhouse gas emissions. The initiative is part of a series of measures to be discussed in July that seek to align the eurozone economy with stricter emission reduction targets for 2030. The tax would affect imports of products such as steel, cement and aluminum, which require high energy consumption in their manufacturing processes. The levy would be based on the carbon costs faced by European producers. The proposal would require importers of these products to purchase special certificates linked to the EU Emissions Trading System. The measure would come into force after a three-year transition period.
