Europe considers tougher measures in its decarbonization strategy

Share

The European Union is considering applying an import tax on a range of products from countries with low standards for controlling greenhouse gas emissions. The initiative is part of a series of measures to be discussed in July that seek to align the eurozone economy with stricter emission reduction targets for 2030. The tax would affect imports of products such as steel, cement, and aluminum, which require high energy consumption in their manufacturing processes. The tax would be based on the carbon emission costs faced by European producers. The proposal aims to require importers of these products to purchase special certificates linked to the EU Emissions Trading System. The measure would take effect after a three-year transition period.
