Blockchain Comes to Recycling

Chilean AI startup focused on plastic recycling

Information is power. That’s the firm belief at the Chilean startup StatKnow, to the point that they’re applying this concept to the fight against plastic pollution. The company, which provides services based on statistical science and artificial intelligence, launched the Recyclame project, one of six solutions selected by the international open innovation call “The Plastic Evolution.” The solution focuses on traceability and incentivizing plastic recycling using blockchain technology. The Recyclame solution is based on a conceptual development that StatKnow had been working on with ECLAC. The idea is to systematically identify, quantify, and characterize plastic packaging before recycling, determining where it is located, how much exists by plastic type, which consumers possess it, and its value. StatKnow plans to launch a pilot program with the goal of reaching two million subscribers in Chile by the end of 2022 and subsequently expanding the solution internationally.
