Blockchain for green copper in Chile

New platform to guarantee the origin of the electricity they consume

Share

The National Electric Coordinator has initiated the development of a platform called Renova to track electricity from the time it is generated until it is consumed, which will allow users -especially mining companies- to guarantee the renewable origin of the electricity they use. It is a blockchain-based platform that prevents duplication of supply contracts. This platform supports the efforts that mining companies in Chile are making to reduce their carbon footprint. Copper is one of the metals most benefiting from the expansion of renewable energy, but there is growing pressure for the production of raw materials consumed in the expansion of the green economy to be made with as little environmental impact as possible. In mid-2020 the government estimated that by 2023 45% of the electricity consumed by the mining sector in Chile would be of renewable origin.
