Trademark registrations in Chile saw a sharp increase in the first five months of the year. According to data from the National Institute of Industrial Property (INAPI), between January and May of this year, 27,749 applications were filed, 60% more than in the same period in 2020. Eighty percent of these were domestic applications. According to various experts, this phenomenon reflects a growing interest in entrepreneurship due to the pandemic, both because many people have lost their traditional sources of income, leading them to start their own businesses, and because teleworking has allowed many potential entrepreneurs to discover new business opportunities from home. During 2020, 158,586 companies and new businesses were created in Chile, 14.4% more than in 2019 and the highest figure on record. More than 80% of these were created under the simplified regime.
