Trademark registrations in Chile saw a sharp increase in the first five months of the year. According to data from the National Institute of Industrial Property (INAPI), 27,749 applications were filed between January and May of this year, a 60% increase compared to the same period in 2020. Eighty percent of these were domestic applications. According to various experts, this trend reflects a growing interest in entrepreneurship driven by the pandemic—both because many people have lost traditional sources of income, leading them to start their own businesses, and because remote work has allowed many potential entrepreneurs to discover new business opportunities from home. In 2020, 158,586 companies and new businesses were created in Chile—14.4% more than in 2019 and the highest figure on record. More than 80% of these were established under the simplified registration process.
