The drone delivery business takes flight

With 150,000 deliveries under its belt, Zipline continues to expand

The last-mile drone delivery company Zipline (https://flyzipline.com/) raised $250 million at the end of June to finance the expansion of its services, mainly in Africa, where the company makes virtually all of its deliveries, focusing on health products. Zipline began operating in 2016, using fixed-wing drones to carry medicines, blood, and health supplies to remote locations in Africa, where it delivers them by parachute. Demand for its services has risen sharply in the wake of the pandemic: the company currently delivers to 2,500 locations and expects to reach 6,000 by the end of the year. Unlike other similar start-ups, Zipline has a long track record. In its five years of operation, its drones have flown 18 million kilometers and made 150,000 deliveries. Another of its attributes is that, instead of just focusing on hardware design, Zipline has its own assembly lines, has created its own flight control software, and has its own distribution centers. The company is applying for flight permits from the U.S. authorities, where it has an agreement with Walmart to implement a pilot program for delivering medicines and health products to homes in Arkansas.
