Drone delivery business takes off

With 150,000 deliveries under its belt, Zipline keeps expanding

Last-mile drone delivery company Zipline (https://flyzipline.com/) raised US$250 million at the end of June to fund the expansion of its services, primarily in Africa, which is where the company does virtually all of its deliveries, focused on healthcare products. Zipline began operating in 2016, flying fixed-wing drones carrying medicines, blood and healthcare supplies to remote points in Africa, where it delivers them by parachute. Demand for its services rose sharply in the wake of the pandemic: the company currently delivers to 2,500 locations and expects to reach 6,000 by the end of the year. Unlike similar start-ups, Zipline has a long track record. In its five years of operations, its drones have flown 18 million kilometers and made 150,000 deliveries. Another of its attributes is that, instead of just focusing on hardware design, Zipline has its own assembly lines, has created its own flight control software and its own distribution centers. The company is currently processing its flight permits with the U.S. authorities, where it has an agreement with Walmart for the implementation of a pilot plan to deliver medicines and health products to homes in Arkansas.
