World GDP reaches US$100 trillion for first time

Driven by supportive policies deployed during the pandemic

In 2022 we will have to add one more digit to global GDP. According to the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR), one of the largest British economic consultancies, the world economy will exceed US$100 trillion this year. That is 100 plus twelve zeros.

The CBR's projections estimated that global GDP would reach that mark in 2024, but the strong recovery of the economy thanks to the supportive policies deployed during the pandemic brought the process forward. However, the CEBR warns that if current inflationary pressures persist, it will be difficult for policymakers to prevent some economies from falling into recession. "A major theme for the 2020s will be how global economies manage inflation," Douglas McWilliams, vice president of the British consultancy, told Bloomberg. CEBR expects that a relatively minor adjustment in the direction of the economy can bring non-transitory elements under control. Otherwise, he says, the world could enter recession in 2023 or 2024.
