M&A fever in 2021

The financial sector dominated transactions

2021 was a year of economic surprises, despite the global health emergency. This is the case of mergers and acquisitions, which last year set a record in value and number of deals, according to a report by S&P Global. M&A deals totaled US$4.04 trillion (million billion) in 2021, which compares with US$2.5 trillion last year.

There are several striking data. On the one hand, the average transaction value was US$90.1 million, compared to US$69.7 million last year. On the other hand, the strong growth of transactions in the financial sector, which rose 124% compared to 2020 and led the transactions. However, as a sign of the times, the real estate sector showed a strong acceleration in the last quarter of 2021, occupying the first place with US$169.5 billion.
