Micro mobility is here to stay

The pandemic has added supporters of this mode of transportation.

The pandemic has brought about many changes in habits. One of them has been to reinforce people's preference for the use of "ciclos" (bicycles and scooters) to move around the city, the so-called micro mobility. In a survey conducted by the Chilean Safety Association at the beginning of 2021, 56% of the women and 65% of the men consulted said they used "ciclos" as a means of transportation and as a work tool. In addition, 19% of those surveyed said that they started using them because of the pandemic.

The trend is repeated in other parts of the world. According to the Mobility Ownership Consumer Survey, conducted by the consulting firm McKinsey in July 2021, 70% of respondents indicated their willingness to use bicycles, scooters and mopeds to commute to work. Preferences vary by region, with bike-friendly countries such as China and Italy topping the list. According to McKinsey, the survey results confirm the trend observed in previous surveys towards increased preference for these vehicles. And today, with oil prices above US$100 a barrel, their appeal is greater than ever.
