Micro-mobility is here to stay

The pandemic has increased the number of supporters of this mode of transport.

The pandemic has brought about many changes in habits. One of these has been to reinforce people's preference for using "cycles" (bicycles and scooters) to get around the city, known as micro-mobility. In a survey conducted by the Chilean Safety Association in early 2021, 56% of women and 65% of men surveyed said they use "cycles" as a means of transportation and a work tool. Nineteen percent of those surveyed also said they started using them because of the pandemic.

The trend is repeated in other parts of the world. According to the Mobility Ownership Consumer Survey, conducted by McKinsey in July 2021, 70% of respondents said they were willing to use bicycles, scooters, and mopeds to commute to work. Preferences vary by region, with quintessential cycling countries such as China and Italy topping the list. According to McKinsey, the survey results confirm the trend observed in previous surveys toward an increase in preference for these vehicles. And today, with oil above $100 a barrel, their appeal is greater than ever.
