Meli Air: Mercado Libre's airline turns one year old

The logistics bet of the largest e-commerce company in Latin America

Mercado Libre, Latin America's largest e-commerce company, is considering expanding its air operations to Chile and Colombia. A year ago, the company launched its own cargo airline - MeLi Air - in Brazil and Mexico, which uses exclusively, and under its colors, four aircraft from other existing cargo airlines.

With this strategy, Mercado Libre follows in the footsteps of other e-commerce giants, such as Amazon, Alibaba and JD.com, which also operate their own fleets of airplanes. The company's air strategy seeks to reduce delivery times for the items it sells. In Chile, Mercado Libre announced a US$100 million investment plan between mid-2020 and 2022. In August of this year it started operating its second distribution center in the country.
