Meli Air: Mercado Libre's airline celebrates its first anniversary

The logistics strategy of the largest e-commerce company in Latin America

Mercado Libre, Latin America's largest e-commerce company, is considering expanding its air operations to Chile and Colombia. A year ago, the company launched its own cargo airline—MeLi Air—in Brazil and Mexico, which exclusively uses four aircraft from other existing cargo airlines, painted in its colors.

With this strategy, Mercado Libre is following in the footsteps of other e-commerce giants, such as Amazon, Alibaba, and JD.com, which also operate their own fleets of aircraft. The company's aviation strategy seeks to reduce delivery times for the items it sells. In Chile, Mercado Libre announced a US$100 million investment plan between mid-2020 and 2022. In August of this year, it began operations at its second distribution center in the country.
