We do many things with WhatsApp. Initially, the platform—now owned by Meta—was only for sending messages, then it was enabled for calls and video calls, and today it is common to use it to send documents, proposals, and even contracts.
Now Meta is going one step further. In early March, Brazil's Central Bank approved the use of Meta's payment platform in small and medium-sized businesses across the country via WhatsApp.
Meta is using Brazil as a testing ground for its business messaging service, in a strategy that seeks to offset falling advertising revenue. Brazilians have been able to make payments via WhatsApp since 2021, but only between individuals. Now they will be able to make payments to small and medium-sized businesses through the platform.
