This week marks World Water Day, an occasion that comes at a time when alarms are sounding in Chile—and particularly in Santiago—over the scarcity of this vital resource. Do you know which countries experienced the highest levels of water stress in 2020?
Singapore. The Asian city-state tops the water stress ranking, with an index of 5. This index measures the ratio of total water withdrawal (for domestic, industrial, agricultural, and other uses) to the availability of water from renewable sources. Singapore joins five other countries with an index of 5, all of which are located in the Middle East. Chile, with an index of 4.56, ranks 23rd among the 157 countries considered.
