Super grids for electricity transmission: China's trademark

China leads the world in super transmission of electricity

Can you imagine a kind of internet, but for transmitting electricity instead of data? Chinese President Xi Jinping has, and he announced it at the United Nations a few years ago. Science fiction? Yes, but in the real world, China has been working both on developing and implementing technology to transmit electricity in high- and ultra-high-voltage networks (HVDC and UHVDC), in which it is already a global leader, and acquiring electrical assets in different parts of the world, including Latin America. In Brazil alone, Chinese companies had invested US$36.5 billion in electricity companies and projects by 2019, including the construction of one of the world's longest UHVDC transmission lines, stretching 2,500 kilometers. Experts believe that the development of these long-term lines is essential to efficiently harness the planet's solar and wind energy potential, connecting generation centers with consumer markets thousands of kilometers away. And for now, China has taken the lead. It is no surprise that Geido, one of the main organizations behind this idea, is based in Beijing.
