Power transmission supergrids: China's brand name

China leads the global leadership in electricity super-transmission

Share

Can you imagine a kind of Internet, but for transmitting electricity instead of data? China's President Xi Jiping has, and he announced it at the United Nations a few years ago. Science fiction? Yes, but in the real world, China has been working both on developing and implementing technology to transmit electricity in high and super-high voltage (HVDC and UHVDC) grids, in which it is already a global leader, and acquiring electricity assets in different parts of the world, including Latin America. In Brazil alone, Chinese companies had invested US$36.5 billion in electricity companies and projects by 2019, including the construction of one of the longest UHVDC transmission lines in the world, 2,500 kilometers. For experts, the long-term development of these lines is imperative to efficiently harness the planet's solar and wind energy potential, linking generation centers with consumer markets thousands of kilometers away. And for now, China has taken the lead. Not surprisingly, Geido, one of the main organizations behind this idea, is based in Beijing.
