TRIVIA

What is the world's largest stock market operator by market capitalization?

  1. Intercontinental Exchange (Operator of NYSE)
  2. London Stock Exchange Group (operator of LSE and AIM)
  3. HKEX (Operator of the Hong Kong Exchange and the London Metal Exchange)
  4. CME Group (operator of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange)

Response:

HKEX is the stock market operator with the largest market capitalization since the beginning of this year, when it reached US$74.5 billion, displacing CME. HSKE has had an aggressive expansion in recent years. In 2012 it bought the LME-the leading global exchange for copper and other metals-and tried unsuccessfully to acquire London Stock Exchange Group in 2019. At the end of May, HKEX released its new CEO, the first one who is not ethnically of Chinese origin: he is the Argentine Nicolás Aguzin, former JP Morgan. One of Aguzin's main tasks will be to continue the expansion of the HKEX, which is already the main gateway connected to global investors and China's corporate and debt market. In that vein, HKEX this year took a 7% stake in the Guangzhou Futures Exchange, which is not yet operational. Guangzhou will specialize in "green" asset futures and is expected to become the main market in China for trading CO2 emission futures contracts, which the government plans to launch at the end of June.
