This week, in the context of the presidential tour, Chile and Brazil signed an agreement that marks a milestone for artificial intelligence in the region: the incorporation of Brazil as a key partner of Latam GPT, the first open language model with a Latin American identity.
The project, led by the National Center for Artificial Intelligence (CENIA), seeks an AI that understands and reflects the linguistic, social and cultural diversity of the region. Unlike global models trained with data from the "Global North", Latam GPT aims to build technological sovereignty from the south of the planet.
The addition of Brazil is particularly significant, as the country recently launched its ambitious Brazilian Artificial Intelligence Plan 2024-2028, backed by a public investment of more than $4 billion. The partnership envisages joint model development, academic exchange and access to shared supercomputers.
But Latam GPT goes beyond technology: it proposes a regional strategy with ethics, inclusion and a critical eye. From the training of talent to the creation of common regulatory frameworks, this agreement positions Latin America as a relevant player in the global debate on AI.
The first version of the model is scheduled to be launched in mid-2025. Until then, more countries are expected to join this collective effort.
