How have consumer habits changed after the pandemic?

In the service sector, small businesses have emerged stronger after the pandemic, growing at 1.5 to 2 times the rate of growth of large companies.

A recent global study by MasterCard on consumer trends sheds interesting light on how the way people consume has changed. Here are the main findings:

Consumers are spending more on eating out or ordering food from restaurants. MasterCard estimates point to 25% growth in restaurant spending-whether in-person or online-versus 14% growth in grocery store sales.

After months - or years - of mobility restrictions, consumers have turned to air travel. Up to August, this item shows a 16% increase compared to 2019 levels. However, there is an interesting change: short or medium-haul flights are growing more than long-haul flights.

In the services sector, small businesses have emerged stronger after the pandemic lockups, growing at 1.5 to 2 times the growth rate of large companiesIn August, spending on services offered by small and medium-sized businesses was 59% higher than in the same month of 2019, while spending by large companies grew by 34%.
