The right to health is one of the issues that forms part of the constitutional debate in Chile, with the proposal to establish a single state health system.
With per capita spending of US$1,376, Chile ranks second only to Uruguay (US$1,661) in terms of healthcare spending, according to World Bank data. The investment appears to be paying off: Chile, along with Costa Rica, is the country with the highest life expectancy, at 80 years. These figures contrast with those of the US, the country that spends the most on health per capita (US$10,921), but where life expectancy is 77 years.
