Only 23% of global GHG emissions are covered by some mechanism to incentivize their reduction.

Reducing carbon dioxide emissions is one of the key tasks in mitigating climate change. One strategy for achieving this is to to place a price on emissions of this greenhouse gas. Today, according to the World Bank, there are 73 such initiatives, whether through emissions tax schemes, cap-and-trade systems, or credits in exchange for investments in projects that reduce emissions.

A total of 39 countries have one of these schemes, in addition to 33 subnational jurisdictions. As of 2023, these initiatives cover 23% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
