Only 23% of global GHG emissions are covered by some mechanism to incentivize their reduction.

Reducing carbon dioxide emissions is one of the main tasks in moderating climate change. One of the strategies to achieve this is to emissions of this greenhouse gas. Today, according to the World Bank There are currently 73 such initiatives, either through emission tax schemes, emission limits and markets, or credits in exchange for investment in projects that reduce emissions.

A total of 39 countries have one of these schemes, in addition to 33 subnational jurisdictions. In 2023, these initiatives cover 23% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
