Humanoid robots: the future of work is advancing, but cautiously

The new report from Bain & Company warns that, although progress is rapid and investments are growing, mass adoption will still require time, testing, and strategy.

In recent years, humanoid robots have gone from being experimental prototypes to becoming one of the most closely watched technological developments by industry, investors, and the media. Capable of walking, manipulating objects, and learning from their environment thanks to artificial intelligence, these systems promise to transform sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and services. However, according to the report "Humanoid Robots: From Demos to Deployment" by Bain & Company, the road to their effective commercial deployment is just beginning. 

The report notes that, despite media attention and increasingly sophisticated demonstrations, most humanoid robots still operate in highly controlled environments. Current tests show significant advances in mobility, computer vision, and coordination, but they also reveal key limitations: reduced autonomy, high costs, high energy consumption, and the need for constant human supervision in complex tasks. 

Even so, market interest has not waned. Large technology companies and specialized startups have raised billions of dollars in funding, driven by the expectation that humanoids will, in the medium term, be able to fill roles where there is currently a labor shortage or where the tasks are repetitive, physically demanding, or risky for people. 

Bain warns, however, that the real challenge is not just technical. For humanoid robots to move from demonstrations to real, scalable use, it will be necessary to develop a complete ecosystem that includes adequate infrastructure, reliable software, clear regulatory frameworks, and, above all, acceptance by workers. The coexistence of humans and robots in workspaces will require new skills, processes, and models of collaboration. 

The report concludes that the adoption of this technology will not be immediate or disruptive overnight. Instead, a gradual incorporation is expected. gradual incorporation, based on pilots, specific use cases, and continuous learning. For organizations, the message is clear: it is not about jumping on the bandwagon late, but about observing, experimenting, and preparing now for a transformation that, although advancing step by step, could redefine the way we work in the coming years.
