The boom of digital nomads in Mexico City

The arrival of foreigners has brought business opportunities for locals, but also an increase in the price of rents.

All thanks to the pandemic. As we know, teleworking opened up the horizon for many peoplewho discovered that they could continue to work from anywhere in the world, giving rise to digital nomads.

For U.S. digital nomads, Mexico City has become a favorite destination. With a vibrant cultural life, famed gastronomy and architectural richness, the Mexican capital is also much cheaper than any U.S. city. Cool and low cost. This is how Mexicans have seen a noticeable increase in the presence of Americans in their streets, especially in the most stylish neighborhoods, such as Roma or Condesa. Y with the massive layoffs in U.S. technology companies, many expect the volume of digital nomads from the northern neighbor to grow considerably in the near future.

This has brought interesting business opportunities for locals, such as cafes with teleworking facilities and entertainment venues, as well as an increase in offers for short-term apartment rentals. These have increased by 44% between the first half of 2019 and the same period this year.

But it's not all good news. With the boom, gentrification is coming. Rental values have gone up and local neighbors are starting to be displaced as apartment owners are preferring to offer their properties on platforms like Airbnb.
