The great leap of HIF and e-fuels: from Punta Arenas to the world

It began as an innovative project located near Punta Arenas: to take advantage of the potential of the area's winds to produce hydrogen from wind energy, capture CO2 from the atmosphere and manufacture synthetic fuels - gasoline and diesel, among others - low incarbon. The project, called HIF, is promoted by the Chilean electric company AME, which together with its partners is already building the pilot plant in Magallanes.

But the idea did not stop there. This month HIF announced the addition of new partners-including automaker Porsche and investment funds managed by EIG and Baker Hughes-raising US$260 millionto expand the idea worldwide. HIF Global 's plans aim to build 12 commercial plants in the US, Chile and Australia, with investments of US$50 billion to produce 150,000 barrels per day of carbon-neutral fuels, the company's chief executive, Meg Gentle, said in an interview. This would mean capturing 25 million tons of CO2 per year.

Meanwhile, HIF is preparing to start its first fuel production in Magallanes in the second half of this year.
