It began as an innovative project located near Punta Arenas: harnessing the potential of the area's winds to produce hydrogen from wind energy, capture CO2 from the atmosphere, and manufacturecarbon-neutral synthetic fuels, including gasoline and diesel. The venture, called HIF, is being promoted by the Chilean electricity company AME, which, together with its partners, is already building the pilot plant in Magallanes.
But the idea did not stop there. This month, HIF announced the addition of new partners—including car manufacturer Porsche and investment funds managed by EIG and Baker Hughes— raising US$260 millionto expand the idea worldwide. HIF Global plans to build 12 commercial plants in the US, Chile, and Australia, with investments of US$50 billion to produce 150,000 barrels per day of carbon-neutral fuels, said the company's CEO, Meg Gentle, in an interview. This would mean capturing 25 million tons of CO2 per year.
Meanwhile, HIF is preparing to start its first fuel production in Magallanes in the second half of this year.
