Jorge Chávez International Airport, the main gateway to Peru, is undergoing a transformation process that will mark a before and after in the country's airport infrastructure.

With 99.1% progress - according to the Supervisory Body for Public Transportation Infrastructure Investment (OSITRAN) - and an investment of approximately US$ 2 billion, this ambitious project seeks not only to improve the passenger experience, but also to strengthen Lima's position as a key air hub in South America.

This modernization and expansion project includes the construction of a new passenger terminal and a second runway 3,480 meters long, which will initially serve 30 million passengers as of 2025, doubling the current capacity.

In this sense, the air terminal will grow from 2 million m² to more than 9 million m², incorporating more commercial spaces and services for passengers. In addition, the terminal will incorporate more automation technologies, 180 check-in counters check-in counters68 boarding gates and 20 new self-check-in stations. With these advances, the new Jorge Chávez is expected to consolidate its position as a hub hub, facilitating the transit of international flights and improving the network of connections for travelers.

The modernization of the airport is already having a major impact on various productive sectors of the country:

• Employment: More than 15,000 direct and indirect jobs have been generated during construction, and more than 30,000 new jobs are expected to be created once the infrastructure is in operation.
• Tourism: It is estimated that -in the coming years- passenger capacity will double, reaching 60 million per year, by 2030.
• Trade: With the capacity to handle a greater volume of air cargo, the airport is estimated to facilitate the transport of Peruvian products to international markets, increasing exports by 20% over the next five years.

Towards a future of connectivity

While the project has experienced challenges, such as adjustments to delivery schedules and additional costs, the authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to deliver a world-class airport. The new runway has been operational since April 2023, and the new terminal is expected to be operational by March 30 (at the latest).

With this project, Peru is taking a fundamental step towards the future, betting on an infrastructure that guarantees greater efficiency, comfort and competitiveness in the airport sector.
