Chile and the carbon tax

The tax rate in Chile is not one of the highest, something that many specialists complain about.

Did you know that only 24 countries in the world have carbon emission taxes, and one of them is Chile? According to data from Our World in Data, in Latin America, in addition to Chile, only Argentina, Colombia and Mexico have this type of tax.

However, the tax rate in Chile is not one of the highest, something that many specialists complain about, pointing out that a low tax on emissions does not reflect the effects of these on climate change and the costs it generates on society and the economy as a whole, and does not generate sufficiently strong incentives for their reduction. According to Our World in Data, in 2020 the price per tonne emitted in Chile (adjusted for the sectors taxed and the country's total emissions) was US$2.34, well below the US$48.81 in Sweden, but clearly above the rates in Argentina, Colombia and Mexico (see table).

No Latin American country, however, has a carbon emissions market, which does operate in Canada, the United States, Europe, Kazakhstan and, recently and partially, in China.
