Artificial intelligence is something that has been in our conversations for a long time, but was little tangible. The advent of ChatGPT artificial intelligence chat has brought this concept into the everyday world. Virtually anyone with internet access can now test the power of AI. But we are still far from an AI machine or network of machines that is capable of learning to do everything we humans can do, although there is a growing consensus among experts that it will happen in the future. How soon? Here the visions are much more scattered.

Our World in Data compiled into a timeline the responses of 352 experts surveyed in mid-2022 in a study led by academic Katja Grace of Oxford University's Future of Humanity Institute (HERE) on when they expect AI to surpass the performance of human intelligence. While there is a very small group of experts who believe this will never happen, half believe it will happen before 2061, while 90% put the date sometime in the next 100 years.
