Tomorrow, September 4, Chile will decide on the proposed new constitution. A referendum that marks one of the most important and transcendental milestones in Chile's recent history. To analyze the post-referendum scenarios, FYNSA organized, together with La Tercera, an event that was broadcast on latercera.com and streamed through FYNSA's social networks, in which the following participated Roberto Izikson, manager of Public Affairs of the pollster Cadem; the former congresswoman and former conventional Marcela Cubillos; and the former minister and former congressman José Antonio Viera-Gallo. The debate was moderated by journalist Matías del Río. journalist Matías del Río.

Citizen perception

The constitutional discussion is taking place in a very special framework, according to Izikson, with deep changes in the perceptions of the citizenship, which shows in the last three years a strong deterioration of self-confidence, with a loss of pride about what it means to be Chilean and a polarization regarding the self-perception about their welfare, with the richest sectors showing higher levels of satisfaction with their life and the lower-middle sectors showing higher levels of dissatisfaction than before the social outburst. A framework that paradoxically includes a relegitimization of the Armed Forces and the security forces and a revaluation of experienced politicians. "We are in an environment of fear and uncertainty," Izikson said. "Whatever the outcome of the plebiscite, the government will face much greater challenges than it did before the social outburst."

Regarding what we can expect after the referendum, Cubillos, who supports rejection, is suspicious that the groups that support the constitutional proposal will be open to the significant changes that, in his opinion, the constitutional text requires in the event that the referendum is approved. that, in his opinion, the constitutional text requires in case the approval wins.. Viera-Gallo, who supports the approval, trusts, on the contrary, that the political forces will agree to make the corrections that the constitutional proposal needs.
