HyX is the latest pilot project for the production of green hydrogen in Chile to obtain an environmental permit for its development. The project, owned by the French utility company Engie, will produce green hydrogen to be sold to Enaex to produce ammonia, a raw material used in the manufacture of explosives for mining.

The project is located in the Antofagasta region, where there are other green hydrogen projects—such as Hoasis, a project by the company TCI Gecomp and supported by the University of Concepción—are transforming this region into a potential hub for green hydrogen.

Concepción —home to a green hydrogen project by CAPis located—for the steel mill in Huachipato—is also positioning itself to become a hub for green hydrogen projects through the FIC project, a public-private research and development partnership led by the University of Concepción.

These initiatives are in addition to those that have been established in the Magallanes region, in the far south of the country, where HIF has already begun construction of its pilot plant for the production of synthetic fuels from green hydrogen. There, the French company Total Eren has begun studies for the H2 Magallanes megaproject, as has Austria Energy and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners with the HNH project.
