In the midst of a digital transformation, the Internet of Things (IoT) represents a new stage in operational efficiency and data-driven decision represents a new stage in operational efficiency and data-driven decision making. This concept refers to the connection of physical devices to the internet, allowing them to collect, transmit and act on information in real time. From sensors in warehouses to energy meters in industrial plants, IoT not only optimizes processes, but also opens up new opportunities for investment and strategic growth.

According to McKinsey, the potential economic value of IoT could exceed $12 trillion annually by 2030. 12 trillion dollars per year by 2030with a strong impact on sectors such as manufacturing, energy, agriculture and healthcare. At Latin Americaand especially in Chilethis transformation is already underway. Companies in areas such as logistics, mining and energy are incorporating IoT solutions to improve traceability, reduce costs and anticipate failures, thus generating competitive advantages in increasingly demanding markets.

From a financial perspective, the IoT provides new sources of relevant data for risk assessment, asset valuation and risk assessment, asset valuation and investment decision-making.. For example, an agricultural company that anticipates weather phenomena through sensors improves its profitability, while a real estate company that automates energy consumption in its properties becomes more attractive to investors who prioritize efficiency and sustainability.

In the case of Chile, IoT growth has been driven by strategic sectors. In mining, connected sensors allow monitoring operational conditions in real time, reducing risks and increasing safety. In energy, smart meters are redefining the relationship between customers and suppliers, fostering a more efficient and flexible use of resources. These initiatives also respond to the sustainability and digital transformation commitments made by many local companies.

However, the expansion of the IoT poses significant challenges in technological literacy, digital infrastructure and cybersecurity.. As the number of connected objects increases, so do the vulnerabilities to potential threats. Therefore, understanding this technology is not only relevant for technical teams, but also for leaders, investment managers and strategic decision makers.

In this context, the Internet of Things is consolidating as a key tool for efficiency, innovation and competitive advantage.. Companies that manage to integrate digital capabilities with a strategic vision will be the best positioned to face the challenges - and take advantage of the opportunities - of the future.
